Saint-Joseph runs some fifty kilometres along the right bank of the Rhône, from Condrieu down to Cornas. The good parcels sit on granite terraces directly above the river, while the flatter ground inland gives lighter wine.

Syrah here is the most immediately approachable of the northern Rhône, floral and peppery, drinkable at five years. A small amount of white is made from Marsanne and Roussanne. For the same grape with more structure, look to Cornas.
