Beaune

Beaune is the town at the centre of the Côte and the seat of its trade, and its own vineyard climbs the slope just behind the walls. The appellation is mostly premier cru, 42 climats over more than 300 hectares, mostly red, with some white.

The village appellation was recognised on 11 September 1936 and its premiers crus on 14 October 1943. It covers 475 hectares, of which 337 in premier cru; in 2023, 406 hectares were in production, 338 in red and 68 in white, for 19,456 hectolitres, 14,466 of them premier cru. The vines lie between 220 and 300 metres on clay-limestone soils. The 42 premier cru climats include Les Grèves, Les Fèves, Clos des Mouches, Clos du Roi, Les Marconnets, Les Bressandes, Les Teurons, Aux Cras, Les Perrières and Les Aigrots.

The town is also home to the Hospices de Beaune, founded on 4 August 1443, whose wines have been sold at auction since 1859. The reds of Beaune are fairly powerful, rich and deep in colour, moderately tannic and made to keep; the whites, about an eighth of the appellation, are Chardonnay, and 42 of their 68 hectares are in premier cru. Among the estates with a page here, Domaine Michel Lafarge makes Beaune premier cru Les Aigrots, and Domaine Dugat-Py a Beaune premier cru Clos des Avaux.

The wines above are the Beaune wines in the cellar. See also Savigny-lès-Beaune, Pommard, Volnay, our premier cru Burgundy or the full range of Burgundy wines.
