Corton

Corton is the grand cru of the hill that rises between Aloxe-Corton, Ladoix-Serrigny and Pernand-Vergelesses, and the only red grand cru of the Côte de Beaune. With more than a hundred hectares it is the largest grand cru of Burgundy, and its wines carry the name of their climat, Clos du Roi, Bressandes or Renardes.

The appellation was recognised on 31 July 1937 and covers 105 hectares and 57 ares over three communes, of which about 90 were in production in 2023. The vines lie between 250 and 330 metres on the flanks of the hill, on reddish, stony clay-limestone soils rich in marl and potassium. Production in 2023 was 3,922 hectolitres, 95 percent red. A red Corton may add the name of its climat: Clos du Roi, Le Corton, Les Bressandes, Les Renardes, Les Chaumes, Les Perrières, Les Pougets, Les Languettes, Les Grèves and a dozen others, each a different face of the hill. A little white Corton is made as well.

The wine is powerful and structured, with berry fruit, pepper and liquorice, and needs time; it is generally given four to twelve years. On the upper slopes of the same hill, facing south and west, Chardonnay makes Corton-Charlemagne. Among the estates with a page here, Domaine de la Romanée-Conti counts Corton among its nine grands crus.

The wines above are the Corton wines in the cellar. See also Beaune, Savigny-lès-Beaune, the other grands crus of Burgundy or the full range of Burgundy wines.
