Pommard

Pommard is the village between Beaune and Volnay that makes firm, long-lived reds. Red only, from Pinot Noir, it counts 28 premiers crus, the Rugiens and the Épenots at their head, and its wines are known for needing time.

The village appellation was recognised on 11 September 1936. It covers 337 hectares, of which 125 in premier cru; in 2023, 313 hectares were in production, 118 of them premier cru, for 14,851 hectolitres, 5,207 in premier cru. The soils are clay-limestone on the mid-slope. The 28 premier cru climats include Les Rugiens Bas and Les Rugiens Hauts on the Volnay side, Les Grands Épenots, Les Petits Épenots and the Clos des Épeneaux towards Beaune, Les Arvelets and the Clos de la Commaraine.

The wine is deep in colour and astringent in its first years, a wine for keeping that asks for about ten years to soften; it has more colour and body than Volnay, its neighbour to the south, and keeps longer. Beaune lies to the north.

The wines above are the Pommard wines in the cellar. See also our premier cru Burgundy, our red wines or the full range of Burgundy wines.
