The village appellation dates from 9 September 1937. It covers 212.55 hectares, of which 125.88 in premier cru. The 29 premier cru climats include Caillerets, Champans, Clos des Chênes, Clos des Ducs, Clos de la Chapelle, Frémiets, Taillepieds and Santenots, the last one lying on the commune of Meursault but sold under the Volnay name. The vines sit between 230 and 280 metres, facing south to south-east, on oolitic limestone that is pink with pale green inclusions, under banks of schist.

The Bourgogne wine board describes Volnay as admired for its delicacy, its sap and its bouquet, with violet, gooseberry and cherry when young, then spices, game and cooked prune with age. Average production over 2017 to 2021 was 7,694 hectolitres a year, including 4,425 in premier cru.

Among the estates of the village, Domaine Michel Lafarge has farmed biodynamically since 2000 and holds premiers crus in Clos des Chênes, Les Caillerets and Les Mitans, as well as the Clos du Château des Ducs, a monopole.
