Musigny

Musigny is the grand cru that gives Chambolle-Musigny its name, on the upper slope south of the village, just above the wall of the Clos de Vougeot. It covers 10.86 hectares in three climats, almost all Pinot Noir, with a small plot of Chardonnay for the only white grand cru of the Côte de Nuits.

The appellation was recognised on 11 September 1936 and covers 10 hectares and 85 ares, divided into three climats: Les Musigny proper, 5.9 hectares, Les Petits Musigny, 4.2 hectares, and the eastern part of La Combe d'Orveau, 61 ares. In 2023, 10.11 hectares were in production in red and 0.66 hectare in white. The soil is clay-limestone, with clays rich in iron oxide over a partly marly base, well drained and well structured. Eleven estates declared a harvest in 2023, and the red production was 421 hectolitres, about 56,000 bottles.

Musigny is the counterpart of Bonnes-Mares, the other grand cru of Chambolle-Musigny, with a keeping potential of fifteen to thirty years. Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé holds most of the vineyard, about 7.2 hectares, and makes the Musigny blanc; the other owners hold small parcels.
