Marsannay

Marsannay is the northernmost village appellation of the Côte de Nuits, at the gates of Dijon, over the communes of Chenôve, Marsannay-la-Côte and Couchey. It is the only village of Burgundy allowed to make wine in all three colours, and its rosé has its own appellation.

The appellations Marsannay, for red and white, and Marsannay rosé were created by decree on 19 May 1987, late by the standards of the Côte, after decades in which the village sold its wine as Bourgogne. In 2023 the vineyard in production covered about 284 hectares: 217.6 in red, 51.9 in white and 14 in rosé, for 14,988 hectolitres. The soils are clay-limestone, thin on the slope and deeper on the plain. Marsannay has no premier cru yet; a request for several climats has been before the INAO since 2012.

The reds have the character of the Côte de Nuits and resemble their neighbours of Fixin and Gevrey-Chambertin; the rosé, made from Pinot Noir, is the wine that made the village known in the twentieth century. Among the estates of the village, Domaine Bruno Clair, based at Marsannay-la-Côte, makes Marsannay in the three colours alongside its grands crus further south.

The wines above are the Marsannay wines in the cellar. See also Fixin, Gevrey-Chambertin, the Hautes-Côtes de Nuits or the full range of Burgundy wines.
