Chambertin

Chambertin is the grand cru that gave its name to the village of Gevrey and to eight other grands crus around it. Its 12.9 hectares lie beside the Clos de Bèze on the slope south of the village, facing east, and give a red wine of power that is usually kept ten to twenty years.

The story of the name is that of a peasant called Bertin who planted vines next to the monks' Clos de Bèze; his champ de Bertin came to rival it, and after his death the monks bought it. The appellation was recognised on 31 July 1937. The climat covers 12.9 hectares; 13.14 hectares were declared under the Chambertin name in 2023, for 581 hectolitres, about 77,000 bottles. The vines face east between 240 and 250 metres, on brown clay-limestone earth over the Prémeaux limestone.

Napoleon's taste for it is documented: he took a stock of it to Egypt and drank little else, cut with water. The wine is powerful, opulent, complex and elegant, with red fruit, liquorice, spice, rose and violet, and keeps ten to twenty years or more. Twenty-two estates declared a Chambertin harvest in 2023, so the wine comes in many hands and many styles.
