Organic Wines

This page gathers the wines of estates that farm organically, most of them certified by Ecocert or an equivalent body. Organic means no synthetic pesticides, herbicides or fertilisers in the vineyard, and, since the 2012 vintage in the European Union, a set of rules in the cellar too.

Until 2012 a European label could only say 'wine made from organic grapes'. Regulation 203/2012 created the category of organic wine: the grapes must be grown without synthetic chemicals, and the winemaking follows its own rules, with a shorter list of permitted additives and lower sulphite limits than for conventional wine, 100 milligrams per litre for dry reds instead of 150, and 150 for dry whites and rosés instead of 200. Certification is granted and renewed by an approved body such as Ecocert.

We class an estate as organic from its certification, estate by estate. Biodynamic estates are organic first, and many of our natural wines come from organic vineyards as well, so the three pages overlap. The page draws mainly on Burgundy, and on Champagne, the Rhône, the Jura and the Loire; estates from Italy, Switzerland, Portugal or California also appear.

Among the estates with a page here, Domaine Dugat-Py at Gevrey-Chambertin made its first organic trials in 1999, farmed the whole domaine organically from 2003 and signed up for certification in 2012, Domaine Michel Lafarge in Volnay has farmed biodynamically since 2000 and is certified by Ecocert and Demeter, and Domaine Prieuré Roch uses no synthetic products in the vineyard or the cellar.

The wines above are the current selection. See also our red wines, white wines or the full range of Burgundy wines.
