The Liger-Belair family has held vines in Nuits-Saint-Georges since the 18th century. Claude Marey founded the trading house C. Marey there in 1720, later listed on the Lyon Stock Exchange in 1923. In 1852 the company became C. Marey & Comte Liger-Belair after Guillaume Félix Marey's daughter married Comte Louis Liger-Belair, owner of Grand Cru vines in Vosne-Romanée. In 1982 Vincent Liger-Belair took over the family buildings and reorganised part of the vineyards under sharecropping with three winegrowers, so that one of his sons could later take over the domaine. In 2001 his son Thibault Liger-Belair took back the exploitation of those vineyards and created Domaine Thibault Liger-Belair.

The domaine farms plots in Richebourg and Clos Vougeot Grand Cru, Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru "Les Saints-Georges", Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru "Les Petits Monts", and other parcels in Nuits-Saint-Georges, Vosne-Romanée, Gevrey-Chambertin and the Hautes-Côtes de Nuits. In 2003 Thibault Liger-Belair also created a second company, Thibault Liger-Belair Successeurs, to buy back part of the family's former holdings and to buy grapes from other growers under contracts that fix the yield. In 2008, after studying in the Beaujolais region, he began buying vineyard plots on the historic slope of the Moulin-à-Vent appellation in Chénas, applying the same principle used in Burgundy: isolating each parcel of granite soil instead of blending them into one cuvée. The first vintage from this estate, called Domaine des Pierres Roses, was made in 2009, and its plots were farmed organically and biodynamically from the start.
