Stéphane Magnien, Côte de Nuits winemaker, among his dormant winter vines, framed with Dynamic Cellars wave design

Domaine Stéphane Magnien

Domaine Stéphane Magnien has been in the same family at Morey-Saint-Denis since 1897. Four generations on, Stéphane Magnien makes Morey-Saint-Denis and Chambolle-Musigny from vines that have never seen a herbicide, with grands crus in Clos Saint-Denis and Charmes-Chambertin.

Victor Magnien founded the domaine in 1897 in the village of Morey-Saint-Denis. It passed to Félix, then to Jean-Paul, and today Stéphane Magnien, the fourth generation, runs it. The estate states that its vines have never known a herbicide: the soils were ploughed by horse, then by tractor, to keep them alive and to send the roots deep.

Harvest is by hand and vinification is traditional. The wines age for 14 to 18 months in oak barrels, depending on the appellation, and are generally bottled without fining or filtration. The domaine's own list of appellations also names Clos de la Roche, which does not appear in the selection here.

The heart of the range is Morey-Saint-Denis, from village cuvées to the premiers crus Les Faconnières and Aux Petites Noix, alongside Chambolle-Musigny, including the premier cru Les Sentiers. Two grands crus crown the estate: Clos Saint-Denis and Charmes-Chambertin. A Coteaux Bourguignons completes the list.
