Domaine Léon Barral was founded in 1993 within the Faugères appellation, close to Béziers in the Languedoc. It is run by Didier Barral, who learned viticulture from his grandfather. The estate covers 60 hectares in total, of which about 30 hectares are planted to vines, with the rest given over to woodland, cereals and livestock.

The vines grow on south-facing schist hillsides, sheltered by the Cévennes foothills, with roots reaching as deep as nine metres into red, iron-rich and blue schist layers that hold both heat and water. Yields average around 25 hectolitres per hectare. Vines are trained in goblet, without trellising, kept grassed through harvest, and treated with a single sulfur application a year against mildew and oidium. Around seventy head of cattle of old regional breeds and a number of Gascon black pigs graze the estate after harvest, and roughly 7,000 trees and hedgerows have been planted across the property. The wines are made with whole clusters macerated for a month, aged for two years in barrel or concrete, fermented with indigenous yeasts and bottled with minimal added sulfur.
