Domaine de l'Écu is run today by Claire and Fred Niger, who farm the estate's vines using organic and biodynamic methods. The property has been certified organic since the 1970s and biodynamic under Demeter since 1998. It has also been part of Biodyvin, a group of biodynamic winegrowers, since 2014.
The 30 hectares of vines lie around Le Landreau, about twenty minutes east of Nantes in the Muscadet region. In the cellar, the domaine avoids added yeast, enzymes, thermo-vinification and reverse osmosis, aiming to keep each wine tied to its terroir and vintage. A large part of the range is aged in clay and stoneware amphorae of varying sizes, from 160 to 1500 liters, a practice the estate developed after exchanges with winemaker Philippe Viret in the southern Rhône. The cellar holds more than a hundred amphorae, sourced mainly from southern France and northern Italy. The wines are sold through independent wine shops and restaurants rather than supermarkets, and are bottled in lightweight glass to reduce the estate's carbon footprint.
At Dynamic Cellars, the Domaine de l'Écu range includes the amphora-aged Carpe Diem in the 2014 and 2018 vintages, the granite and orthogneiss bottlings of Muscadet, and the Vin de France cuvée Matris 2018. These wines sit alongside our other Loire Valley wines and natural wines, as well as our selection of biodynamic wines and white wines.
