Domaine de Chevalier

Domaine de Chevalier is a wine estate in Léognan, in the Pessac-Léognan appellation south of Bordeaux, whose vineyard was developed from 1865 by Jean Ricard. It has belonged to the Bernard family, previously merchants of cognac and Bordeaux wine, since 1983. The estate produces both red and white wine and was ranked among the Crus Classés de Graves in 1953.

The property dates back to the seventeenth century under the name Chivaley, then a small clearing with a few rows of vines among woods and moorland. Its vineyard took shape from 1865, when Arnaud Ricard and his son Jean acquired the domaine; Jean Ricard is regarded as its true founder. From 1900, his son-in-law Gabriel Beaumartin ran the property for forty years. Claude Ricard managed it from 1948 to 1983, and under his direction the domaine entered the Grands Crus Classés de Graves in the 1953 classification.

In 1983 the estate was bought by the Bernard family, a Bordeaux family founded in 1928 by Lucien Bernard and previously active in the cognac and fine Bordeaux wine trade. It is today directed by Olivier Bernard, Lucien's grandson. The vineyard covers around 80 hectares in one block in Léognan, planted mainly to Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot for the red wine, and to Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon for the white. Alongside the grand vin, the estate produces a second wine, L'Esprit de Chevalier.
