Domaine Bizot

Domaine Bizot is a small family estate of about 3.5 hectares, based in Vosne-Romanée and taken over in 1995 by Jean-Yves Bizot, a former geologist. The wines are fermented as whole bunches with little or no added sulphur, yet every one of them is aged in new oak and bottled by hand, barrel by barrel.

Jean-Yves Bizot is the third generation of his family at the domaine. In his grandfather's day it covered almost eight hectares; after the vines were divided at the next succession, the remaining 2.5 hectares were rented out from 1971 to 1995. Jean-Yves, who has also taught viticulture in Beaune, took the vines back that year. He did not like the Burgundies of the 1970s and 1980s, so he asked his father, who had worked in the vat room until 1952, how the wine was made four decades earlier. He is married to Claire Naudin of Domaine Naudin-Ferrand.

Of the 3.5 hectares, 2.5 lie in Vosne-Romanée, and many parcels were planted before 1960. Les Jachées, a village lieu-dit just behind the winery, is the largest parcel, and Bizot is the only grower to bottle it separately. In Échezeaux he owns half a hectare: Les Orveaux is bottled as grand cru, Les Treux usually as Vosne-Romanée premier cru. In 2007 he bought vines in Le Chapitre, a lieu-dit at Chenôve just south of Dijon, bottled as Bourgogne. Herbicides were dropped in 1995, and the domaine has been fully organic since 2004, without certification. A winter freeze to minus 25°C on 19 December 2009 killed the vines of the old-vine Vosne-Romanée, whose last vintage was 2009.

In the cellar, whole bunches ferment in wooden vats at as low a temperature as possible. Every wine, from the Bourgogne to the grand cru, is aged in 100 percent new oak, and each barrel is bottled on its own, by hand.
