The village appellation was created on 11 September 1936. It covers 152.64 hectares, of which 56.33 in premier cru, all planted with Pinot Noir. The 24 premier cru climats include Les Amoureuses, Les Charmes, Les Baudes, Les Fuées, Les Noirots, Les Plantes and Les Sentiers. Two grands crus complete the commune: Musigny and Bonnes-Mares, the latter shared with Morey-Saint-Denis.

The slope faces east at 250 to 300 metres, with only a shallow layer of soil over fissured Jurassic limestone, which lets the roots go deep. The Bourgogne wine board describes the wine as bright ruby when young, with violet and small red fruits, raspberry and strawberry, moving towards spiced ripe fruit and prune with age. The tannins are silky and the texture delicate, which is why Chambolle is often called the most feminine wine of the Côte de Nuits. Average production over 2017 to 2021 was 5,760 hectolitres a year, including 2,252 in premier cru.

Among the estates with vines in the appellation, Domaine Stéphane Magnien, based in the next village of Morey-Saint-Denis, makes Chambolle-Musigny village and the premier cru Les Sentiers.
