Biodynamic Wines

This page brings together the wines of estates that farm biodynamically. Most carry a Demeter or Biodyvin certification; all work without synthetic products in the vineyard and use the nine biodynamic preparations.

Biodynamic farming starts where organic farming ends. A certified estate already meets organic rules, with no synthetic pesticides, herbicides or fertilisers, and then applies the nine biodynamic preparations, numbered 500 to 508, on a documented schedule. The whole estate has to follow the method, not just a few plots. The best-known certifications are Demeter and the Biodyvin label, which is reserved for wine estates.

We class an estate as biodynamic estate by estate, from its certification and the practices the domaine describes. It draws mainly on Burgundy, and on Champagne, the Jura, the Loire and the Rhône, with a few estates from Italy, Switzerland and California.

Among the Burgundy estates with a page here, Domaine Michel Lafarge has been certified biodynamic by Demeter since 2000, and organic by Ecocert. Domaine de la Romanée-Conti has farmed organically since 1985, tested biodynamics from 1990 to 2006 and followed it since, with Biodyvin certification from 2016. Domaine Prieuré Roch farms biodynamically and makes its wines without added sulphites.
