Mythopia was started in 2004, when Hans-Peter Schmidt and Romaine rented 150 square meters of vines above the upper Rhône Valley; the first harvest produced 350 kilograms of grapes. A low-interest loan later let the vineyard grow to more than three hectares of steep hillside plots. In 2009, Hans-Peter Schmidt co-founded the Delinat Institute for Viticulture, Biodiversity and Climate Farming with Karl Schefer, head of the organic wine trader Delinat; the institute went on to publish the Ithaka Journal and to write the Charter for Winegrowing in High Biodiversity. The first vintage sold under the Mythopia name was 2005. Two of its wines, the skin-contact Fendant Disobedience and the Pinot Noir Illusion, began to draw attention in restaurants in Copenhagen, London, Tokyo and New York from 2015 onward.
The vineyard is planted with Pinot Noir, Johannisberg, Fendant, Johanniter, Cornalin and Resi, across three sites at altitudes between 700 and 900 meters. Vines share the ground with fruit trees, flowers and vegetables, and the estate is home to more than 60 butterfly species. Fertilization relies only on compost, ferments and green manure, and the soil stays covered with vegetation year-round. The wines ferment and age without additives, with no selected yeasts and no sulfites, and are bottled unfiltered after several years in old oak barrels in the estate's stone cellar. The vineyard is certified organic (Bio Inspecta) and serves as the research site of the Ithaka Institute for Carbon Strategies, which grew out of the Delinat Institute.
At Dynamic Cellars, the Mythopia range in stock comes from the 2018 vintage: Blue Velvet, Disobedience, Illusion and Lost Highway, all from the Valais vineyard. These are organic and natural wines, part of our world wines selection and our mature wines.
