Maison Roche de Bellene

Maison Roche de Bellene is a Burgundy négociant house based in Beaune, created in 2009 by Nicolas Potel, son of Gérard Potel, who ran Domaine de la Pousse d'Or in Volnay from the mid-1960s until his death in 1997. Potel named the new house after Bellene, an old name for the town of Beaune, once he had left the maison he had built under his own name.

Nicolas Potel grew up around Domaine de la Pousse d'Or, where his father Gérard Potel worked as winemaker from the mid-1960s until his death in 1997. Right after his father's death, Nicolas founded his own wine trading company in Nuits-Saint-Georges, Maison Nicolas Potel, buying old-vine Pinot Noir and vinifying it with a vertical press and a modern bottling line. The Cottin brothers took control of the business in January 2004; a management reshuffle in early 2009 led Nicolas Potel to leave the company that carried his name in March that year.

He kept a small parcel inherited from his mother and vines he had been leasing since 2005, and renamed his estate Domaine de Bellene; its négociant wines are sold as Maison Roche de Bellene. From the outset he farmed organically, with the stated aim of building one of Burgundy's first organic estates. By 2010 the domaine held about 24 hectares, mostly old vines propagated by massale selection, including six premier cru plots in Beaune and old vines in Savigny-lès-Beaune, and that year the range grew to include a Vosne-Romanée premier cru and a Nuits-Saint-Georges premier cru. Alongside the domaine, Maison Roche de Bellene continues to buy grapes and finished wine from growers across the Côte d'Or, from village Bourgogne to grand cru sites in both the Côte de Nuits and the Côte de Beaune.
