The domaine was founded in 1863 by Frédéric Mugnier, a liqueur maker in Dijon. By the early twentieth century, the family held close to twenty hectares across Chambolle-Musigny and Nuits-Saint-Georges, run alongside a liqueur factory until 1949. The domaine held sole ownership of the Clos de la Maréchale vineyard from 1902, but leased it to the Faiveley family from 1950. The lease ended on 1 November 2003, when the vineyard reverted to the domaine and its holdings grew from 4 to 14 hectares. Frédéric Mugnier, the fifth generation of the family at the property, took over the estate in 1985.

The domaine farms Chambolle-Musigny at village and premier cru level, including Les Fuées and Les Amoureuses, as well as Musigny grand cru and 0.36 hectares of Bonnes-Mares grand cru. In Nuits-Saint-Georges, it farms the premier cru Clos de la Maréchale. The vineyards are worked without pesticides, following organic and sustainable methods.
