François Raveneau created the domaine in 1948, in the town of Chablis itself, by joining vineyards he had bought to those of his wife's family, the Dauvissats. He handed over to his sons Bernard and Jean-Marie in 1988, and the third generation, Isabelle, Bernard's daughter, and Maxime, Jean-Marie's son, leads the estate today. It has stayed small on purpose: a little under eight hectares in all.

The grands crus are Les Clos, Blanchot and Valmur, on the right bank of the Serein. The premiers crus include Montée de Tonnerre, the largest holding, Butteaux, Vaillons, Forêt, Montmains and Chapelot, and a Petit Chablis completes the range. The wines are Chardonnay only, as all Chablis is. They are raised in feuillettes, the small old barrels of Chablis, seven to eight years old, which bring no new oak to the wine. Each cru is bottled on its own, from Petit Chablis to the grands crus.
