The Berthaut family has farmed vines in Fixin for at least seven generations, starting at the end of the 18th century with François Berthaut's father, who held a few hectares at 9 Rue Noisot. Firmin Berthaut, then Bernard Berthaut, who died young in 1913, followed; Bernard's widow Jeanne ran the estate until their son Guy came of age and took over in 1930. After the Second World War, Guy Berthaut began bottling his own wines and added plots in Gevrey-Chambertin, and in the 1960s he developed exports to the United States. His sons Vincent and Denis, both trained oenologists, took over in 1974 and extended the estate with vines in Fixin village and Fixin Premier Cru, building a new cellar on the Route des Grands Crus in 2005.

In 2013, Denis Berthaut's daughter Amélie moved to the family farm after studying agronomy and oenology in Bordeaux, bringing with her some of the vines of Domaine François Gerbet, her mother Marie-Andrée Gerbet's family estate in Vosne-Romanée. The combined estate, named Domaine Berthaut-Gerbet, covers 18 hectares across Fixin, Gevrey-Chambertin, Vosne-Romanée and Flagey-Échezeaux, producing wines that are 90 percent red. In 2017, Amélie's husband Nicolas Faure joined as head of cultivation, having trained at Domaine Jean-Louis Chave, Domaine de la Romanée-Conti and Domaine Prieuré-Roch. The vines are farmed with an organic tendency, and the wines are vinified and aged with minimal intervention.

At Dynamic Cellars, Domaine Berthaut-Gerbet is represented by three Fixin bottlings from 2023, the village Fixin, Fixin Les Crais and Fixin 1er Cru Les Arvelets, alongside a 2023 Gevrey-Chambertin and the 2016 Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Petits Monts.
