Clos Rougeard takes its name from a property recorded in the village of Chacé since 1664. Eight generations worked the land before it passed to brothers Charly and Nady Foucault, who took over in the 1980s and farmed without synthetic products. Charly Foucault died in Angers on the night of 28 to 29 December 2015. In June 2017, Martin and Olivier Bouygues, owners of Château Montrose in Saint-Estèphe since 2016, bought the estate from the Foucault family; the price was not disclosed.

The vineyard covers 15 hectares spread over 25 parcels around Chacé, on clay and limestone soils, planted mainly to Cabernet Franc with some parcels of Chenin Blanc. Some vines are more than a hundred years old. The wines are named after their parcels: Le Bourg, an old-vine plot in the village on limestone; Les Poyeux, close to three hectares of clay and windblown sand facing the estate; and Brézé, a chalky rise planted to Chenin Blanc. After more than two years in barrel, the wines continue to age in bottle in tuffeau cellars seven metres underground.
