The first records of a vineyard on this site date to the seventeenth century, when the property belonged to a nobleman named Sociando; by the late nineteenth century a Cocks et Féret guide ranked it among the leading estates of Saint-Seurin-de-Cadourne. Jean Gautreau, who had founded his own wine trading firm in 1957, bought the estate in 1969; it then covered only 5 hectares and had fallen into neglect. Gautreau rebuilt the vineyard over the following decades and ran it until his death in November 2019, at the age of 92; his daughter, Sylvie Gautreau, had already taken over its management some years earlier.

Sociando-Mallet lies on gravel soils typical of the Médoc, on the commune of Saint-Seurin-de-Cadourne, north of Saint-Estèphe. The vineyard is planted mostly to Cabernet Sauvignon, with Merlot and a smaller share of Cabernet Franc. By choice of its owner, the estate has never entered the Cru Bourgeois classification.
