The estate takes its name from Gombaud de Lafite, who held the property in 1234. The Ségur family acquired it in the 17th century, and around 1680 Jacques de Ségur planted most of the vineyard. His descendant Nicolas Alexandre de Ségur developed the estate's wine and its reputation through the early 18th century. The family lost the property during the French Revolution: Nicolas Pierre de Pichard, who then held it, was executed in 1794. Dutch merchants bought the vineyard in 1797, and the Vanlerberghe family owned it through the early 19th century, before Baron James Mayer de Rothschild bought Château Lafite in 1868 for 4.4 million francs. He died three months later, and his three sons, Alphonse, Gustave and Edmond, inherited the estate jointly.

Château Lafite was ranked a First Growth in the 1855 Bordeaux classification. Its vineyard covers 107 hectares, planted mostly to Cabernet Sauvignon, about 70%, with Merlot at around 25% and the rest split between Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot; the exact blend of the wine varies with each vintage. Éric de Rothschild ran the estate from 1974 to 2018, when his daughter Saskia de Rothschild succeeded him.
