Vivant Micault, secretary to King Louis XV, built the château in 1726 near the ruins of an eleventh-century fortress, to a design by the Parisian architect Charles-Étienne Brisseaux. The estate passed through several owners over the following two centuries: Micault's sons inherited it in 1756, wine merchant Claude Marey bought it in 1763, and Nicolas-Joseph Marey and his wife Émilie Monge, daughter of the mathematician Gaspard Monge, held it from 1770 to 1818. After her husband's death, Émilie Marey-Monge ran the estate herself, becoming its first female head. Louis Laplanche bought the property in 1936, and his son Jean later reunited plots that had been divided. Maurice Giraud acquired the château in 2003, and Michael Baum bought it in 2014.

The vineyard is the Clos Marey-Monge, twenty hectares enclosed within a stone wall of about two thousand meters, built in 1812, and divided into seven named plots: Simone, Chantrerie, Les Paules, Grand Champ, 75 Rangs, Micault and Émilie. It sits within the Pommard appellation and grows Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. In July 2015, UNESCO recognized the Clos as a protected climat within the Burgundy world heritage listing. The estate began converting to biodynamic farming in 2016.
