The village appellation dates from 31 July 1937 and includes a few plots in the neighbouring village of Remigny. In 2022 it covered 223.12 hectares of white, of which 121.17 in premier cru, and 86.13 hectares of red, of which 26.95 in premier cru. The 55 premier cru climats include Morgeot, Abbaye de Morgeot, Caillerets and Blanchot Dessus. Three grands crus lie on the commune: Montrachet, Bâtard-Montrachet and Criots-Bâtard-Montrachet.

The slope rises from 220 to 325 metres and its soils run from pebbly limestone through marl to sandy ground, all on a Jurassic base, which explains why the two grapes do well here. The Bourgogne wine board describes the white as glittering gold with mayflower, acacia and honeysuckle, turning to honey and ripe pear with age, with a mineral and long palate. The red is bright with purple highlights, with Morello cherry, cherry stone and wild strawberry, and tannins that fill out with time. Average production over 2017 to 2021 was 10,327 hectolitres of white and 3,667 of red a year.

Two estates with pages here own vines in the appellation. Domaine Ramonet is based in the village; its first parcel, bought in 1934, was the premier cru Ruchottes. Domaine Dugat-Py, from Gevrey-Chambertin, makes a Chassagne-Montrachet premier cru Morgeot.
