Champagne Marguet

Champagne Marguet is a family estate in Ambonnay, on the Montagne de Reims, whose vines have been in the family since the 1850s. Benoît Marguet, the fifth generation, has made the wines since 1999 and farms his ten hectares biodynamically, with horses in the vineyard.

The Marguet family has grown vines in Ambonnay since the 1850s. In 1883 Émile Marguet grafted his vines onto American rootstock ahead of phylloxera, a decision that made the family's name in the village. Émile then sold his vineyards to Champagne Henriot. Benoît's parents rebuilt a family estate, Marguet-Bonnerave, in the early 1970s; Benoît began making the wines in 1999 and took full control of the Marguet Père et Fils label in 2005.

He farms ten hectares: 8.5 owned by him and his parents, 1.5 leased from other family members. Most lie in Ambonnay; two hectares are in Bouzy. Both are grand cru villages of the Montagne de Reims where Pinot Noir leads. The vineyards are worked biodynamically, ploughed by horse since the end of the 2000s, and treated with plant infusions and essential oils rather than synthetic products; the estate is certified organic by Ecocert and biodynamic by Demeter. In the cellar the wines are moved by gravity, aged long on their lees and released with little or no dosage.

The range starts with Shaman, the non-vintage cuvée, and continues with wines named after their village or their parcel, Ambonnay, Verzenay from bought grapes, Les Crayères, Les Saints Remys, and the Sapience cuvée made from organically grown grapes. Still red Coteaux Champenois from Ambonnay and Bouzy complete it.
