Louis Roederer began as Dubois Père & Fils, founded in Reims in 1776. Louis Roederer inherited the company from his uncle in 1833 and gave it his name. In 1876, Tsar Alexander II asked the house for a champagne unlike any other, and the result was Cristal, first made for the Russian imperial court and sold commercially from 1945. The house remains family owned and is led by Frédéric Rouzaud, the seventh generation of his family to run it.

Louis Roederer has owned vineyards since 1845. It farms 240 hectares across the Montagne de Reims, the Vallée de la Marne and the Côte des Blancs, which supply about two thirds of the grapes it needs. The house began converting vineyards to organic and biodynamic farming in 2000.
