The village appellation was recognised on 8 December 1936. Outside the grands crus it covers 108 hectares, of which 44 in premier cru; in 2023, 88.5 hectares were in production in red and 3.9 in white. Production averaged 4,088 hectolitres a year over 2014 to 2018, 96 percent red. The vines lie between 240 and 360 metres, facing east, on clay-limestone soils. The 20 premier cru climats include Les Ruchots, Clos des Ormes, Les Millandes, Aux Charmes, Les Faconnières, Clos Sorbè, La Riotte, La Bussière and Monts Luisants, where a little white is made.
The five grands crus follow one another from north to south: Clos de la Roche, Clos Saint-Denis, Clos des Lambrays, Clos de Tart and the Morey part of Bonnes-Mares. The reds are fairly powerful, rich, coloured and made for keeping. Two estates with a page here are based in the village: Domaine Ponsot, established in 1872, and Domaine Stéphane Magnien, in the same family since 1897.
