The village appellation was recognised on 31 July 1937. It covers about 450 hectares, of which 134 in premier cru; in 2023, 390 hectares were in production, almost all in white, with 8.5 hectares of red. Production that year was 21,901 hectolitres, 5,592 of them premier cru. The vines lie between 230 and 360 metres on limestone marls, Callovian limestone and Argovian marl. The 19 premier cru climats include Perrières and Clos des Perrières, Charmes, Genevrières, Les Gouttes d'Or, Le Porusot, Les Bouchères, Les Caillerets, Les Cras, Blagny and the Santenots; the red Santenots on the Volnay side are sold as Volnay premier cru.

The wine is green-gold, with ripe grape, almond, hazelnut, honey and citrus, rich, unctuous and full in the mouth; the best premiers crus keep well beyond ten years.
