The village appellation was recognised on 11 September 1936. It covers 445 hectares, of which 50 on the commune of Brochon, with 85 hectares in premier cru; 411 hectares were in production in 2023, for 21,753 hectolitres, 4,024 of them premier cru. The 26 premier cru climats fall in two groups: the flank of the Combe de Lavaux above the village, with Clos Saint-Jacques, Lavaut Saint-Jacques, Estournelles-Saint-Jacques, Les Cazetiers, Combe au Moine, Champeaux and Clos des Varoilles, and the strip beside the grands crus to the south, with Aux Combottes, Cherbaudes, Petite Chapelle and Clos Prieur. The grands crus lie on brown earth with silt and gravelly scree at the top and clay-bearing limestone on the slope; the village vines are lower down, on brown calcareous soils.
Nine grands crus lie south of the village on the same slope: Chambertin, Chambertin-Clos de Bèze, Latricières, Mazis, Ruchottes, Chapelle, Griotte, Charmes and Mazoyères-Chambertin. The wines of Gevrey are deep in colour and powerful, with blackcurrant, cherry, musk and liquorice, and made to age. Among the estates with a page here, Domaine Dugat-Py and Domaine Claude Dugat are both based in the village.
The wines above are the Gevrey-Chambertin wines in the cellar. See also Fixin to the north, Morey-Saint-Denis to the south, our premier cru Burgundy or the full range of Burgundy wines.
