Bonnes-Mares

Bonnes-Mares is a grand cru of the Côte de Nuits shared by two villages, Chambolle-Musigny and Morey-Saint-Denis. Its 14.99 hectares of Pinot Noir give one of the fullest wines of Chambolle, built for long keeping.

The climat was recognised as a grand cru on 8 December 1936. Most of it lies on Chambolle-Musigny, the rest on Morey-Saint-Denis. The vines face east at 250 to 280 metres, on limestone and white marl covered by about 40 centimetres of light, gravelly soil that turns from brown to reddish across the slope. The name has been in use since the late Middle Ages; one reading links it to the old verb marer, to cultivate with care.

The Bourgogne wine board describes the wine as rich and fleshy, with a clearly defined structure, full-bodied rather than flowery, and at times a little wild. The nose evokes violet, humus and underbrush. It can age for thirty to fifty years. Average production over 2017 to 2021 was 484 hectolitres a year, about 64,000 bottles.

Within Chambolle, Bonnes-Mares is the counterpart of Musigny: where the village is prized for delicacy, Bonnes-Mares brings weight and length. The vineyard is divided between estates of both villages, so the style also varies from one cellar to the next.

The wines above gather the Bonnes-Mares available here. See also the other grands crus of Burgundy or the full range of Burgundy wines.
