Jules Métras

Jules Métras is a winemaker based in Vauxrenard, in the Beaujolais, with vines in Beaujolais-Villages and in the Chiroubles cru. He is the son of Yvon Métras, who took over the family domaine in Fleurie in 1988, and he settled on his own account in 2014 after studying in Beaune and working abroad.

Yvon Métras took over his family's domaine in Fleurie in 1988, left the local cooperative and followed the methods of Jules Chauvet and of the winemakers grouped around Marcel Lapierre. His son Jules studied in Beaune and worked abroad before setting up under his own name in 2014, with his cellar in Vauxrenard. He works a few parcels from his father alongside plots of his own in Beaujolais-Villages and in the Chiroubles cru.

The vines are farmed without chemicals and picked by hand. On the steep Chiroubles slopes a cable winch does most of the mechanical work in place of a tractor, and the Bijou parcel in Vauxrenard, at around 450 metres, is ploughed by horse. Jules picks late and waits for a long carbonic fermentation to start on the grapes' own yeasts. The wines then age in neutral barrels and are bottled with no added sulphur.
