Giacomo Conterno

Giacomo Conterno is a family Barolo house in Serralunga d'Alba, run by Roberto Conterno since the death of his father Giovanni in 2004. Its wines come from the Cascina Francia estate, bought in 1974, and from the Cerretta and Arione vineyards added since.

The Conterno family has made Barolo for more than a century. In 1961 the business passed to Giovanni and his brother Aldo. Giovanni's son Roberto worked beside him from 1988 and has run the house since Giovanni died in February 2004.

In 1974 Giovanni bought Cascina Francia in Serralunga d'Alba, 16 hectares, and 1978 was the first vintage made from the estate's own grapes. Roberto added vines in Cerretta in 2008 and the 9 hectare Arione estate in 2015, also in Serralunga.

The wines are made in a traditional way. The Barolo Francia macerates for three to four weeks and then ages for four years in large oak casks; the Barbera d'Alba Francia spends two years in cask. The Monfortino Riserva, made only in some years, stays up to seven years in cask before bottling.

Our cellar holds the Barolo Francia and the Barolo Arione in recent vintages, the Barbera d'Alba Francia, and an older Barolo Cascina Francia Riserva from 1982. See also our Italian wines, the Nervi-Conterno wines of Gattinara, or the collector wines.
