Old archives trace Domaine de l'Arlot to Jean-Charles Vienot, who owned a house and vines in Prémeaux at the end of the 18th century and built the wall that created the Clos de l'Arlot, today a Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru. In 1891, the property was sold to the wine merchant Jules Belin, who enlarged it with the purchase of the Clos des Forêts Saint-Georges and the Clos du Chapeau. Belin's heirs transferred the buildings and vines to AXA Millésimes at the start of 1987, which later acquired two further plots in Vosne-Romanée, the Premier Cru Les Suchots and the Romanée-Saint-Vivant Grand Cru. Jean-Pierre de Smet ran the domaine for close to two decades before handing direction to Christian Seely in January 2007, and technical management passed later to Géraldine Godot, a Burgundy-trained microbiologist and oenologist, in September 2014.
The domaine has used organic methods since 2000, began full conversion in 2003 and earned AB organic certification in 2014 across all its vines. Grapes are picked by hand and sorted twice, in the vineyard and again on arrival at the winery. Fermentation starts spontaneously, part of the crop is vinified as whole clusters when the vintage allows it, and the cap is punched by hand with pumping over kept to a minimum. Red wines move to barrel once vinification ends, while white wines go to barrel before fermentation begins, and malolactic fermentation takes place during aging.
