The estate's wines were first distinguished in the sixteenth century, when Laroque belonged to the Lavie family and grew to as much as 270 hectares; by the Second Empire in the mid-nineteenth century the property still covered around 130 hectares. Like much of Bordeaux, the vineyard was hit hard by phylloxera, and its revival began in 1935 under the Beaumartin family. With help from Bruno Sainson, Laroque was raised to Grand Cru Classé rank in 1996. Xavier Beaumartin ran the estate from 2004 and was succeeded by his nephew, Stanislas Droin, in 2018; David Suire was brought in to manage the property in 2015.

The vineyard sits on limestone soils that the estate credits for the chalky texture of its wines, spread across a plateau, hillsides and terraces sloping south toward the Dordogne valley. The blend is built mainly from Merlot, and Cabernet Franc, with a little Cabernet Sauvignon.
