Aldo Conterno was born in 1931, the son of Giacomo Conterno, founder of the Giacomo Conterno estate in Monforte d'Alba. Aldo left Italy for San Francisco in 1954, was drafted into the US Army and served in Korea, then returned to Piedmont. In 1961 he took charge of the family estate together with his brother Giovanni Conterno, but the two disagreed over how Barolo should be made. Aldo left to found his own estate, Poderi Aldo Conterno, in 1969, separate from the Giacomo Conterno estate that his brother Giovanni continued to run. Aldo Conterno died on 30 May 2012 in Monforte d'Alba, aged 81, and his sons Franco, Stefano and Giacomo Conterno continued the estate.

Poderi Aldo Conterno farms about 25 hectares at roughly 400 metres elevation in the Bussia Soprana district of Monforte d'Alba. Aldo Conterno used large old Slavonian oak casks rather than new French barrique to age his Barolo. The Romirasco vineyard, rented until 1980, was purchased by the estate that year. Barolo Cicala comes from about 2.4 hectares within Bussia, and Barolo Colonnello from a one-hectare plot. The Barolo Granbussia, first test-bottled in 1970 and released commercially from the 1971 vintage, blends grapes from three vineyards within Bussia and is produced only in strong vintages.
