Philippe Alliet

Philippe Alliet makes wine in Cravant-les-Coteaux, in the Chinon appellation of the Loire Valley, on a vineyard devoted almost entirely to Cabernet Franc. His son Pierre joined the domaine in 2005, and together they have moved the vineyard away from herbicides and synthetic fertilizer.

Philippe Alliet and his wife Claude built up the domaine in Cravant-les-Coteaux over decades of work in the vineyard. Their son Pierre joined the family business in 2005 and works alongside his parents.

The vines grow on slopes of clay, limestone and silica facing south, and are pruned hard and picked by hand for low yields; herbicides and synthetic fertilizer have been progressively phased out and are no longer used. The domaine's Cabernet Franc, known locally as Breton, is destemmed completely and fermented with native yeasts. The range includes a village Chinon, 'Vieilles Vignes' from old vines, 'L'Huisserie' grown on a south-facing limestone slope, and 'Coteau de Noiré' from a single steep vineyard; until 2010, aging took place in 225-litre Bordeaux barrels, since replaced by larger 500-litre casks that leave less mark of the wood. The wines age 11 to 20 months before bottling.
