Jean-Michel Stéphan comes from a family of market gardeners and fruit growers on his father's and great-grandfather's side. He created the domaine in 1991 with two hectares of Côte-Rôtie vines, at first selling the grapes to a regional négociant; the first bottles under his own name were released only in 1994. The estate converted to organic farming in 1995 and produced its first natural cuvée in 1997.

In 2017, Jean-Michel Stéphan partnered with his son Romain to create Maison Stéphan, and the domaine moved into a new cellar in 2020. His second son, Dorian, joined the family estate in 2022. The domaine farms Syrah in Côte-Rôtie and Viognier on the granite soils of Condrieu, and makes its wines without added correction products, in the natural-wine approach of Jules Chauvet.
