Joseph Drouhin founded the house in Beaune in 1880 and built a négociant and vineyard-owning business across Burgundy's main regions, from Chablis in the north to the Côte Chalonnaise in the south. The estate remains in the hands of the Drouhin family, run by Joseph Drouhin's great-grandchildren.

In 1988 the family built Domaine Drouhin Oregon in the Dundee Hills of the Willamette Valley, an estate planted to pinot noir and chardonnay under winemaker Véronique Drouhin. In Burgundy, Maison Joseph Drouhin obtained organic certification for all the grapes grown on its own vineyards starting with the 2009 vintage. The Drouhin family belongs to Primum Familiae Vini, a group of family-owned wine estates, and the house continues to combine estate-grown fruit with grapes bought from growers across Chablis, the Côte de Nuits, the Côte de Beaune and the Côte Chalonnaise.
