M. Chapoutier

Chapoutier is a Rhône Valley wine house based in Tain-l'Hermitage, with a family presence in the region documented since 1808 and a business founded there in 1879. Best known for its Hermitage wines, the house farms parcels on several named plots of the hill and has been led by the Chapoutier family across several generations.

The Chapoutier family has been present in the Rhône Valley since 1808. In 1879, Polydor Chapoutier bought vineyards in Tain-l'Hermitage and started the wine business that carries the family name today. Max Chapoutier ran the house until his retirement in 1977, when his sons Marc and Michel Chapoutier took over. From the 1980s, Michel Chapoutier directed a program of vineyard and cellar changes, including a shift to biodynamic viticulture. Mathilde Chapoutier, Michel's daughter, became the company's commercial director in 2017.

M. Chapoutier farms vineyards across the Rhône Valley, from Côte-Rôtie in the north to Châteauneuf-du-Pape in the south, with a particular focus on Hermitage, where the estate holds parcels on several named lieux-dits. The house also owns or manages vineyards outside France, in Portugal, Australia and Spain. Since 1996, Chapoutier has printed Braille text on its wine labels.
