Egon Muller

Egon Müller is the family estate of the Scharzhof, just outside Wiltingen in the Saar, a side valley of the Mosel, where the family grows Riesling only. Egon Müller IV has run it since 1991, alone since 2001.

The Scharzhof gives its name to the Scharzhofberger, the Riesling the family bottles from the hill above the estate. In 1954 Egon Müller III extended the estate by buying half of the Weingut Le Gallais, with the Wiltinger Braune Kupp. His son Egon Müller IV became manager in 1991 and sole manager after his father's death in 2001.

The wines are Riesling in the German Prädikat tradition, where the grade on the label follows the ripeness of the grapes at harvest; the bottles here are Scharzhofberger Auslese, including the Goldkapsel selection, and Beerenauslese. The estate is a member of the VDP, the association of Germany's leading Prädikat estates, and the only German member of the Primum Familiae Vini. Egon Müller IV also makes Riesling abroad: in Slovakia at Château Belá, with Miroslav Petrech, and in the Adelaide Hills of Australia, the dry Kanta Riesling, with Michael Andrewarta.
