Étienne Guigal arrived in Ampuis in 1924 and worked at the Vidal-Fleury house before founding his own in 1946. His son Marcel took over management of the business in 1961 and was joined by his wife Bernadette in 1973. Philippe Guigal, Marcel's son, made his first vintage as winemaker in 1997. The house bought Vidal-Fleury in 1984, acquired the Jean-Louis Grippat and de Vallouit estates in 2001, purchased Domaine de Bonserine in 2006, and added Château de Nalys in Châteauneuf-du-Pape in 2017.

Guigal's own vineyards total slightly over forty five hectares, about half of them in Côte-Rôtie, and the house also sources fruit under long term contracts across the northern and southern Rhône. Its single vineyard Côte-Rôtie wines are named after their plots: La Mouline, first made in 1966 from vines that include a share of Viognier; La Landonne, produced from 1978 and planted entirely to Syrah; and La Turque, made since 1985. In Saint-Joseph, the house farms vines between twenty and fifty years old on limestone and pebbly sand soils around Tournon and Sarras, including the Vignes de l'Hospice plot. Wines are aged at Château d'Ampuis, acquired in 1995, where the house built its own cooperage in 2003.
