Pierre Gelin founded the domaine in 1925 in Fixin, on the northern edge of the Côte de Nuits. His son Stéphen took over the vines in 1969, followed in turn by Stéphen's son Pierre-Emmanuel. In 1950, Pierre Gelin bought an abandoned plot in Fixin, once owned by Claude Noisot, a surgeon to Napoléon, who had renamed it Clos Napoléon in the emperor's honor; the domaine farms it as a monopole. In 1961, Pierre Gelin also bought vines in Gevrey-Chambertin, including the monopole Clos de Meixvelle, a parcel of the premier cru Clos Prieur, and a plot of the grand cru Chambertin-Clos de Bèze.

The domaine's roughly 13 hectares span Fixin and Gevrey-Chambertin, from Bourgogne Passetoutgrain, Bourgogne Aligoté and Bourgogne rouge to village and premier cru Fixin, including Les Hervelets, and the Gevrey-Chambertin holdings. The vines are ploughed and farmed under lutte raisonnée, with only natural, organic-derived fertilizer used when needed; no herbicides are used. Bud thinning and leaf removal are done by hand to control yield and ripeness. Vinification stays traditional, and the wines age 20 to 22 months in oak, with the share of new wood varying by cru and vintage; they are bottled at the property and held one or two more years in the cellars before release.
