The domaine was founded in Vosne-Romanée in 1933, following the marriage of André Mugneret and Jeanne Gibourg. Their son Georges, born in 1929, trained and worked as an ophthalmologist in Dijon while also tending the family vines, and between 1953 and 1985 he added parcels that included Ruchottes-Chambertin, Clos Vougeot and the Chambolle-Musigny premier cru Les Feusselottes. Georges Mugneret died in 1988, and the estate passed to his widow Jacqueline and their daughters Marie-Christine Teillaud and Marie-Andrée Nauleau, who trained in chemistry and oenology. The domaine and a related family label were brought together under the single name Domaine Georges Mugneret-Gibourg in 2009.

The domaine farms about eight hectares in the Côte de Nuits, with holdings in Vosne-Romanée, Nuits-Saint-Georges, Chambolle-Musigny, Vougeot and Gevrey-Chambertin. Grapes are picked by hand and sorted on a table before destemming, then given a short cool maceration and left to ferment for ten to fourteen days with indigenous yeasts. The wine ages in oak for a period that varies with the appellation, with a higher share of new wood for the premier crus and grands crus than for the village wines, and bottles are neither fined nor filtered.
