The Liger-Belair family has held vines in Vosne-Romanée since 1815, when the Napoleonic general Louis Liger-Belair acquired the Château de Vosne and built up sixty hectares that once included La Romanée, La Tâche, La Grande Rue and a share of Clos de Vougeot. The estate broke apart after the death of the Comtesse Liger-Belair in 1931, and on 31 August 1933 most of its vineyards were sold at auction in the town hall of Vosne-Romanée. Two of Comte Henri Liger-Belair's children bought back La Romanée and other parcels, and in 2000 Comte Louis-Michel Liger-Belair, an agricultural engineer and oenologist, created the present domaine to take charge of the family's remaining vines.

The domaine farms vines in Vosne-Romanée, Nuits-Saint-Georges and Flagey-Échezeaux, including the monopole of La Romanée and, since 2012, the Nuits-Saint-Georges premier cru Clos des Grandes Vignes. The whole property has been certified biodynamic by Ecocert since 2012. Fermentation starts on native yeasts without any added yeast, and the grapes are destemmed in whole or in part depending on the cuvée and the vintage. The wines age 10 to 18 months in new oak barrels sourced from three different coopers and forests, without racking, then rest a further two to three months in tank before bottling.
