Château Ducru-Beaucaillou

Château Ducru-Beaucaillou is a wine estate in Saint-Julien-Beychevelle, on the left bank of the Gironde. It was ranked a second growth in the 1855 Bordeaux classification and takes part of its name from Bertrand Ducru, who bought the property from the Bergeron family in 1795. It has belonged to the Borie family, wine merchants originally from Meymac in Corrèze, since the early 1940s.

The earliest traces of the property date to the thirteenth century, and it remained in the hands of the Bergeron family until 1720. In 1795 Bertrand Ducru acquired the estate, and gave it his name. The wine was ranked a second growth in the 1855 classification of Bordeaux wines. In 1866 the property was sold to Lucie-Caroline Dassier, wife of the wine merchant Nathaniel Johnston. The financial crisis of 1929 forced the Johnston family to sell to the Desbarats family, and in the early 1940s the estate passed to Francis Borie, from a family of wine merchants in Meymac, who already grew wine at Château Haut-Batailley in Pauillac.

In 1959 Francis Borie's son, Jean-Eugène Borie, took over and restored the vineyard and cellars. His son, Bruno-Eugène Borie, has directed the estate since January 2003. The vineyard, planted mainly to Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, sits on gravel soils within a 105-hectare property, and a new cellar was built north of the château in 2001. The range also includes La Croix Ducru-Beaucaillou, the estate's second wine.
