Château de Béru

Château de Béru is a Chablis estate built around a fortified château in the village of Béru, about nine kilometers from Chablis. The Béru family has held property there since 1627, though the vineyard was devastated by phylloxera around 1900 and later replanted. The estate is directed by Athénaïs de Béru, a family member who left a career in finance to take over the vines and converted the whole vineyard to biodynamic farming.

Athénaïs de Béru, a member of the family that has owned property in the village of Béru, about nine kilometers from Chablis, since 1627, left a career in finance to take over the estate's vines. Her ancestors also ran a négociant house in Beaune. The château was built in the 15th century and was listed as a historic monument in 2001. The vineyard was devastated by phylloxera around 1900; later generations of the family moved away from winegrowing before the estate was replanted.

The estate's Chablis wines are made entirely from Chardonnay grown on the family's own parcels. Grapes are picked by hand and carried to the winery in 10-kilogram crates within minutes, then pressed gently. Athénaïs de Béru converted the vineyard to biodynamic farming and vinifies without additives; since 2014, some cuvées have been bottled without added sulfur. The estate also runs a négociant range, Les Vins d'Athénaïs, built with growers it supports in their move toward organic and biodynamic farming; those négociant wines have been certified organic since the 2020 vintage.
